Chocolate but not as we know it....

Writer's picture: The Choc SpotThe Choc Spot

With all the struggles with cacao crops leading to super inflated pricing, many have been looking at other options and working on an alternative to try and create chocolate without using cacao beans. Sounds radical, chocolate without the goodness of cacao at the centre of it, but as the world consumes over 8million tonnes in a year, new avenues do need to be explored.

Could fermented fava beans be the new cacao as trialled by UK company Nukoko? Or can a cacao bean alternative be grown in a lab? After 500 lab prototypes ChoViva has been created by a German company using sunflower seeds and oats, but will these chocolate alternatives win our hearts? Lots more work is taking place and we will see offerings start to appear over the next 5yrs. Will they taste just as good as the real thing? We'll have to wait and see.....
